CCTV Systems – An Introduction

CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television) systems are an important part of crime prevention since they deter thieves, monitor the premises, and record important footage. It’s crucial to understand the basics of video surveillance CCTV systems whether you want to prevent theft and loitering in your business or provide a safe refuge for your inhabitants.

CCTV first became popular in Germany in 1942, when the first video surveillance system was established. Shortly after, the United States established its Vericon CCTV system. Their goal was to improve security and safeguard valuables.

How does it work?

A CCTV system consists of a camera, lens, monitor, and recorder.

The system uses cameras to record video footage of a facility. This video is transferred to a recording device (a DVR or NVR), where it is archived for later use. The footage is then relayed in real-time from the cameras to a dedicated monitor, or even a smartphone or PC. Depending on the application, CCTV security systems are connected by coaxial cable, network cable, or wireless signal.

Types of CCTV:

  • Dome Cameras
  • C-Mount Cameras
  • Bullet Cameras
  • Infrared/Night Vision Cameras
  • Day/Night Cameras
  • Wireless Cameras
  • High Definition (HD) Cameras
  • PTZ Pan Tilt & Zoom Cameras
  • Wireless Cameras

Do I need a CCTV license?

There are no explicit federal rules or regulations prohibiting companies from using video surveillance to monitor their employees in the United States. However, there are certain exceptions. Surveillance may be forbidden for some personnel who are engaged in classified or otherwise protected activities in the course of their jobs, but this is a more unusual and circumstantial case.

CCTV System Cost

Each camera for a surveillance system roughly costs $150 per month, or about $1,800 per year. Certain CCTV security systems are more expensive to install than others, depending on various factors. These factors include systems with more wires that require extra trenching, cable running through walls, and post-installation repairs.

There are optional features that can be included in your system for an additional cost, such as a higher resolution, license plate readers, and cameras with special attributes. These features often cost $50 to $300 extra.

Cloud-based systems include cloud storage expenses as well. Therefore, it is critical for facility owners and managers to make an informed security investment decision.
